Both have families, and are strongly individualistic, as self-reliant as any pioneer of the past. The homestead, the river, the bush, the wildlife of the forest, their children and their men—that is what they want out of life. »

« I was talking about women in the town of Peace River [...] and then someone piped up and said 'I think you should see my babysitter,' and I said, 'Babysitter?' and she said 'Well yes, she's Ruth, and she's very ordinary, but she's wonderful. She's a great babysitter.' So I looked the babysitter up. And I just took one look at her and I knew that she was a special person—for me. She just looked great. And she was easy, a nice sense of humour, and kind of rooted to the earth. And very much unlike all the other persons that I'd been hearing about. »
